“Revival is God’s people doing God’s work, God’s way.” Vance Havner (2008)

“The Sermon on the Mount is a statement of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is having His way with us.” Oswald Chambers (1995)

I recently learned an important lesson about doing things God’s way. When a local Sunday School class invited us to lead a study of the Sermon on the Mount (SOTM), I suggested a twenty-six-week series. The class leadership countered with twelve weeks or less and only thirty minutes of teaching each week!

How do you cover fifty-plus sayings of Jesus in such a limited timeframe? Concerned twelve weeks would not allow for anything more than a compromised exploration of the most important sermon ever preached and that generalizing the Sermon would not adequately encourage the doing necessary to produce strong houses (Matthew 7:24-25), I pressed for more time. The leaders stood firm.

Much to my surprise, the syllabus we developed together turned out to be God’s way for the study. He used what I would call an overly simplified approach to reveal several foundations of His kingdom and its good news. Honestly, I am amazed at the revelation and encouragement I received from the study.

In the process, I also learned that deep technical dives into Scripture are not always the best method for teaching, and that God orchestrates teaching opportunities with more consideration for the audience’s needs than the teacher’s abilities and preference.

Lastly, I was once again reminded that God has a way for everything; finding and following His ways always leads to exciting adventures and discoveries.

It should come as no surprise that Jesus has much to say about doing things God’s way: the only way He did everything (John 5:19, 30; John 12:49-50; and John 14:24). In this article, we will explore two of God’s ways for doing the sayings of Jesus. But first… Read the rest of this entry »

Shining Light (Biblical concept-Hiding your light under a bushelLet your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

The workplace was created by God to provide man with the means for loving Him; and not just with our finances. We are to love Him with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. All our talents should be invested into His kingdom work.

To love God fully, we must love our neighbors as ourselves. We love God by loving others, in and through our work. Furthermore, kingdom enterprise has supernatural power to transform communities through works of mercy and service.

When we do our work for others – to meet the needs of employees, customers and those less fortunate – they will see beyond who we are and recognize the One that gives all good gifts to men. They will glorify our Father in heaven. In beholding His glory, they will be transformed (2Corinthians 3:18).

As you make plans for the remainder of this year, be sure to include at least one strategy and project for the One that you serve. Include others in the work. Plan to sacrifice.

Humbly yours and forever His,

Reach OutFor the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. 2Chronicles 16:9

Loyalty is important in all areas of the workplace. In business, we desire loyal customers, partners and employees. Politicians hope their constituents will be loyal to their cause (and vice-versa). Educators want their students and parents to be loyal to their institutions of learning.

Strategist, marketing consultants and brand specialists have developed a myriad of programs and processes to create, sustain and increase the loyalty of others. A lot has been invested by a lot of people. So, why is loyalty so hard to find?

Perhaps we are going about it in the wrong way. Loyalty is a personal thing; and it cannot be manipulated. You cannot buy it. Yes, this flies in the face of expert opinion – because God has a better way. He modeled it Himself; and He sent His Son to do the same.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. Mark 10:45

Workplace Ministry Tip: Loyalty requires personal investment. It should not surprise us that such a valuable thing has a proportional cost. As a leader in the workplace, are you looking to show yourself strong on behalf of others? Are you looking to serve?

Humbly yours and forever His,
